Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for hours when multiple of them entered the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations impacting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that these practices become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
